What is Palatal Expansion?
Palatal expansion uses an orthodontic device to gently widen a child's narrow upper jaw, giving teeth the space they need to grow into proper alignment.
At our Peabody and Newburyport clinics, we use the Leaf Expander, a modern orthodontic appliance with nickel-titanium (NiTi) springs that provide steady, gentle pressure to guide jaw growth.
In children, the upper jaw is made up of two halves joined by a soft spot down the middle. This area allows the jaw to gradually widen as your child grows. When the palate is too narrow, teeth may not have enough room to come in correctly — that’s where palatal expansion can help.
Starting treatment while the jaw is still developing can reduce the likelihood of more significant misalignments later on, and it may help shorten the length of future treatment with braces or Invisalign clear aligners.
Palatal expansion may also support better chewing, breathing, and speech as your child grows.

Why Early Orthodontic Care Matters for Children
When orthodontic concerns start to appear, addressing them early can help guide your child’s development and may reduce the need for more complex treatment later in life. Early care at Pavlo Orthodontics can include options such as palatal expansion, braces, or clear aligners, depending on your child’s needs.

How the Leaf Expander Works
A child's palatal bones continue to grow until they reach puberty, which makes the ages of five to 11 an ideal window for addressing a narrow upper jaw.
At Pavlo Orthodontics, we use the Leaf Expander, a modern device designed for comfort and effectiveness.
The Leaf Expander is fixed in place and relies on gentle, continuous pressure from nickel-titanium (NiTi) springs to guide the palate’s natural growth. Unlike traditional expanders, it does not require parents to make daily adjustments.
The appliance works quietly as your child goes about their day, supporting proper jaw development and making room for emerging adult teeth.
Treatment with the Leaf Expander is carefully monitored by our orthodontic team to ensure the palate widens at the right pace. This early guidance helps create a strong foundation for a healthy, well-aligned smile.
