Orthognathic Surgery at Pavlo Orthodontics

Orthodontic surgery, also known as corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery, is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to reposition the upper or lower jaw so the teeth align properly.

While braces can correct many tooth and bite concerns, some orthodontic issues are caused by jaw positioning rather than tooth alignment alone.

In these cases, orthognathic surgery may be recommended as part of the overall treatment plan.

In addition to improving facial balance and smile alignment, jaw surgery can enhance a patient’s ability to breathe, chew, and speak.

When combined with orthodontic treatment such as braces, orthognathic surgery can help create a properly functioning bite and an aligned smile.

The Surgical Orthodontic Process

Surgical orthodontics is a coordinated treatment process that can take up to two or three years to complete.

It begins with your general dentist, who ensures your teeth, gums, and jaw are healthy and ready for treatment. Your orthodontist then develops a personalized plan to align your teeth into their ideal positions in preparation for surgery.

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs the procedure to reposition your jaws. After your jaw has healed, your orthodontist creates a second treatment plan to refine your tooth alignment and bite. The result is improved function and a more balanced, aligned smile.

Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics combines braces from our orthodontists with corrective jaw surgery to properly align the upper and lower jaws.

This approach can address a variety of orthodontic and health concerns, such as TMJ disorders, traumatic injuries, abnormal jaw development, or obstructive sleep apnea.

For patients facing these issues, surgical orthodontics can help reduce chronic headaches, improve breathing, and support proper chewing and speech.
